VOS

What is the VOS Program?

The Visual Observation Specialist (VOS) Program is a community-based effort in Big Horn County that brings together law enforcement, hospitals, mental health professionals, prevention organizations, and local government to provide support for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis or suicidal thoughts.

The goal is simple but powerful: to keep our family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and community members alive and safe.

Instead of placing individuals in crisis in jail for their own protection, the VOS Program ensures they remain in a safe, supportive hospital setting while appropriate next steps are determined.

Why It Matters

  • Saves Lives: Having a trained community member present can be the difference between life and death.

  • Supports Dignity: People in crisis are cared for in a therapeutic environment rather than behind bars.

  • Strengthens Resources: By having VOS volunteers, law enforcement can remain in the community, and medical staff can focus on urgent care.

  • Reduces Costs: This approach lowers strain on already limited county resources.

What Do VOS Specialists Do?

  • Visual Observation Specialists provide compassionate, watchful support for individuals in crisis while maintaining safety for all.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Monitoring individuals to ensure their safety.

    • Communicating with hospital staff and law enforcement when necessary.

    • Listening with compassion, without judgment.

    • Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

    • Documenting concerns, especially statements about suicide or self-harm.

Volunteers are never expected to provide medical treatment or counseling—your role is to be a safe, steady presence.

How It Works

  • When Needed: Volunteers are contacted by call, text, or email when there is a current need. Slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Flexibility: You only volunteer when you are available—there are no on-call requirements. Shifts can be as short as 2 hours or up to 12 hours.

  • Compensation: VOS Specialists are independent contractors with Big Horn County and are paid for their time (biweekly).

Who Can Volunteer?

  • We’re looking for caring, responsible community members who:

    • Are committed to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

    • Can remain calm in stressful situations.

    • Want to make a real difference in their community.

Training is provided, and ongoing support is available.
